# CSS Positioning

> Learn how to control the position of elements on a webpage using CSS positioning properties

## Introduction to CSS Positioning

CSS positioning allows you to control how elements are positioned in the document flow. Understanding positioning is crucial for creating complex layouts and precisely placing elements on a webpage.

## The `position` Property

The `position` property specifies the positioning method used for an element. There are five different position values:

* `static` (default)
* `relative`
* `absolute`
* `fixed`
* `sticky`

## Static Positioning

Key characteristics of relative positioning:

1. The element remains in the normal document flow
2. Other elements are not affected by its positioning
3. The space originally occupied by the element is preserved
4. Offset properties (`top`, `right`, `bottom`, `left`) move the element relative to its original position

## Absolute Positioning

The `position: absolute` positions an element relative to its nearest positioned ancestor (an ancestor with a position value other than `static`). If no positioned ancestor exists, it positions relative to the initial containing block (usually the viewport).

Key characteristics of absolute positioning:

1. The element is removed from the normal document flow
2. Other elements behave as if the absolute element doesn't exist
3. The element is positioned relative to its nearest positioned ancestor
4. If no positioned ancestor exists, it's positioned relative to the initial containing block
5. Offset properties position the element relative to its containing block

### Centering with Absolute Positioning

You can center an element using absolute positioning and negative margins:

## Fixed Positioning

The `position: fixed` positions an element relative to the viewport. The element stays in the same position even when the page is scrolled.

## Sticky Positioning

Key characteristics of sticky positioning:

1. The element is treated as relatively positioned until it crosses a specified threshold
2. Once the threshold is crossed, the element is treated as fixed
3. The element is constrained to its containing block
4. At least one of `top`, `right`, `bottom`, or `left` must be specified

Common use cases for sticky positioning include:

* Section headers in a long list
* Navigation that sticks to the top after scrolling past a certain point
* Table headers that remain visible

## The `z-index` Property

The `z-index` property specifies the stack order of positioned elements (which element should be placed in front of or behind other elements).

  z-index: 2; /* Higher stack order, appears in front */

Key points about `z-index`:

1. It only works on positioned elements (elements with a `position` value other than `static`)
2. Higher values appear in front of elements with lower values
3. Elements with the same `z-index` are stacked in the order they appear in the HTML (later elements on top)
4. `z-index` can be negative, placing elements behind non-positioned elements
5. `z-index` creates stacking contexts, which can limit the effect of `z-index` values in nested elements

## Offset Properties

The offset properties (`top`, `right`, `bottom`, and `left`) specify the distance between a positioned element and its reference point.

* For `relative` positioning, they offset the element from its normal position
* For `absolute` positioning, they offset the element from its positioned ancestor

* For `sticky` positioning, they define the threshold at which the element becomes fixed
